Across the strap the colour drifts from deep smoky charcoal to soft, glowing pewter, with a faint hint of violet catching in the grooves between the scales. The raised scales take the light while the channels around them fall into shadow, giving the strap a lovely depth and an almost liquid shimmer. And at the generous 40mm width, there’s plenty of it to enjoy. Fastening it is our caiman tail buckle, a chunky sculpted plaque in polished silver modelled on the ridged armour of a caiman’s tail, with bold, rounded scutes rising in rows and an uneven, organic edge that gives it a raw, primal feel. It’s weighty in the hand and full of character, and the natural partnership between the sculpted tail and the croc pattern below makes buckle and strap feel as though they’ve come from the same creature. Chunky, edgy, and a lot of fun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt 40mm, this is a belt for smart casual dressing, and it’s made for the weekend. It works well for both men and women. I’d wear it with black jeans, a grey tee and a leather jacket, or with charcoal trousers and a black roll-neck for an evening out. Gunmetal is a far more interesting choice than plain black, and it plays beautifully with grey, black, white and navy. On her, it’s brilliant slung low over skinny jeans and a slouchy knit, or worn with a black jumpsuit and ankle boots.
