Across its length the colour shifts from deep smoky charcoal to soft, glowing pewter, with a whisper of violet catching in the deeper grooves between the scales. The raised scales and the channels around them take the light differently, so the whole strap shimmers as you move, polished but never brash. It’s a wonderful way to bring depth and light to greys and blacks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there’s the buckle. A sculpted snake in gunmetal coils round on itself in a graceful figure of eight, wrapping its body into a knot as if it has decided to settle in for good. Every scale is picked out in a fine diamond pattern, each one finely textured so it glitters as the light hits it, and its head rests on its coils with two tiny Swarovski crystal eyes glinting back at you. Tone on tone with the gunmetal strap, it looks wonderfully cohesive, like the snake has emerged from the leather itself. It’s a true piece of jewellery and the kind of detail that makes an outfit pop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGunmetal is a far more interesting choice than black, and this belt proves it. It works with everything black does, but it brings sheen, texture and a whole lot more personality. It works well for both men and women. I’d wear it with black jeans, a charcoal knit and a leather jacket for a night out, or with grey trousers and a black shirt when I want a quiet bit of theatre. The narrow width means it slips easily through the loops of tailored trousers too, so go ahead and wear it with a dark suit and see who notices. On her, it’s sensational at the waist of a black slip dress, over a silk shirt with wide-leg trousers, or with skinny jeans and a slouchy grey knit. One warning, though: the snake has a way of becoming the main topic of conversation.
