Making things properly takes time. No stopwatch, no shortcuts, no rushing the process. The time it takes is simply the time it takes. True craftsmanship cannot be hurried - because quality is not an added detail, it is the foundation of everything we stand for at Elliot Rhodes.
When Elliot Rhodes was founded in 2004, the ambition was simple: to create products we could genuinely be proud of, trusting that our clients would recognise and value uncompromising quality in the same way we do. More than 20 years later, that belief continues to define both our work and the loyal clients who return to us time and time again.
One hour and seven minutes. That is exactly how long it takes to make our simplest belt.
Behind every belt are 20 individual steps and 20 pairs of skilled hands. Each stage is carried out with precision by artisans whose knowledge has been passed down through generations. This is what artisanal craftsmanship truly means - not simply making by hand, but making with patience, expertise, and an unwavering attention to detail. Creating a belt properly is far from simple, and the human touch remains integral to every part of the process.
1. Selecting the Leather
Each hide is carefully laid out and inspected by hand. Natural leather carries its own character, but only the finest sections are chosen. Any imperfections are worked around during cutting to ensure every belt meets our exacting standards.
2. Cutting the Upper & Lining
Once approved, the outer leather and inner lining are cut precisely to shape. Every layer is measured with consistency in mind, forming the foundation of the finished piece.
3. Refining the Thickness
The lining is then checked and, where necessary, split to achieve the perfect balance of flexibility and structure - a subtle detail that defines how the belt will feel over time.
4. Reinforcing the Core
At the centre of every Elliott Rhodes belt sits a regenerated leather fibre layer. This hidden component is essential: preventing stretching while giving the belt its signature strength and refined profile.
5. Precision Gluing
The upper and inner lining are passed through a calibrated gluing machine, adjusted carefully to the dimensions of each leather panel to avoid excess waste and maintain a clean finish.
6. Hand Bonding the Layers
After a short drying period, the layers are joined entirely by hand. Excess glue is removed and edges are refined before the leather moves to the next stage.
7. Pressing for Perfection
The bonded leather is rolled through a pressing machine to eliminate air bubbles and ensure a flawless, even surface throughout the strap.
8. Cutting the Belt Strips
Large leather panels are then sliced into perfectly even strips using a pedal-controlled cutting machine, allowing artisans complete control over speed and precision.
9. Creating the Smaller Components
From these strips, the loops, tongues, and loop attachments are individually cut. Remaining leather is thoughtfully repurposed wherever possible - a reflection of both craftsmanship and considered design.
10. Shaping the Tip
The tip of the belt is shaped according to the chosen design, using hand-selected cutters that create the distinctive silhouette of each style.
11. Reinforcing the Tongue
The tongue section is strengthened internally to ensure durability around the popper fastenings, preserving the integrity of the leather through years of wear.
12. Preparing the Loops & Attachments
The smaller leather components are glued and dried separately, ready to be assembled alongside the main strap.
13. Cutting the Loop Straps
Machines are recalibrated once again to cut thinner strips specifically for the belt loops, maintaining consistency across every detail.
14. Hand Skiving the Edges
Artisans then thin the edges of the belt, loops, and tongue entirely by hand. This traditional process allows the leather to fold and stitch cleanly without unnecessary bulk.
15. Building the Belt
The outer leather, reinforcement layer, and inner lining are brought together for the final construction stage. Every piece is aligned and bonded manually for complete accuracy.
16. Refining the Width
Once assembled, the belt is trimmed to its exact final width. Even a fraction of a millimetre matters - ensuring the buckle fits perfectly without placing stress on the leather.
17. Perfecting the Shape
The belt tip is recut and refined once more, creating the clean, balanced finish expected from a handcrafted luxury accessory.
18. Signature Stitching
Each belt is stitched using two thread colours: one chosen to complement the inner lining, the other selected to enhance the character of the outer leather. The same attention is applied to every loop and attachment.
19. Hand-Painted Edges
The edges are painted entirely by hand using custom-mixed colours developed specifically for each design. After drying, the leather is polished and buffed repeatedly - a process carried out three times to achieve the smooth, glass-like finish synonymous with fine leather goods.
20. Final Finishing & Branding
The belt is cut to its final length, adjustment holes are punched, and hardware is secured into place. Finally, the inside of the leather is heat-stamped with the Elliot Rhodes mark - the last detail in a process defined by craftsmanship, precision, and enduring design.
At Elliot Rhodes, every belt begins long before the buckle is attached. It starts with the leather itself - carefully selected, meticulously inspected, and handled by artisans who understand that true luxury lies in precision, restraint, and uncompromising detail.
